CUWAM…..a reunion with friends past and present

Saturday morning…..a lazy start to the weekend….out of bed at 10.30am, brisk walk to the corner cafe for large Cappuchino….and the day begins….

A craving for a bacon sandwich propels me to the Royal Randwick shopping complex where I do what one might consider a weekly shop…boring but necessary….I purchase 3 rashons of pig, 90 cents worth of rocket and cos lettuce, and 70 cent roll from the local bread shop….I come home, and crisp up the pig rashons….and dress the bread roll with pepper and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice….and i am refueled for a catch up 29 years in the making!!

Alex and I meet at Bulli Pre-School in 1982…..and our friendship has been rekindled through the medium of facebook ( it is good for something!!) We had been threatening to catch up since 2007 when I established the White Cockatoo Pub, Petersham ‘ Chicken Schnitzel’ Appreciation Club….but alas it was not to be…

Our meeting place was Centennial Park Cafe, and I was meeting her two beautiful children as well. Mai Anh and Kien, partners in crime that afternoon, educating me on the likes of Ben 10 and Spiderman, who Kien stated clearly ‘ Could not be a woman’…Over hot chocolate and the occasional rain shower, Alex and I caught up….talking about our childhood days in Austinmer to our current situations as single ladies in the big smoke….It was so much fun, and despite the absence of regular catch ups over the past few decades….the conversation was effortless….and plans for a catch up in July were put in place…Cannot wait!!

To the evening…and a text had been received from a friend with the following invitation ‘ I’m going to have a couple of quiet beers on Saturday at the Norfolk Hotel, Cleveland st for my 30th….If you feel having a party 363 days after the day is a bit silly, come down and celebrate my 31st’….how could I refuse!!

The Norfolk Hotel was seriously cool, a hang out for those who take themselves and their hair very seriously….Despite this, I entered the pub curious to sample the taco selection on offer….word on the street was that they rivalled the Mexican cuisine to be found on the west coast of the USA (!!??)

Aaron, the birthday boy, was in fine spirits, happy to let the night play out in typical Aaron fashion….unscripted…there were no introductions…Despite the fact I knew no one, I took the initiative to start-up conversation with the eclectic mix of people gathered at the celebration.

It was a generally fun night, the food was AMAZING…and I will return for Tuesday night Taco night, to sample the chicken, beef, pork and fish taco’s…..

As for another catch up with Aaron, this Wednesday we may check out a movie or Jelly Wrestling in Pettersham at the Oxford Tavern….
