Five Sentence Fiction- Sunshine

Word prompt- Sunshine

Breakfast television was overwhelming…it was as if both hosts had drunk caffeine shots, taken a hit of speed, over indulged in spray tan and teeth whiting sessions….and them decided that this was the perfect look for a 5am start.

” And now for the weather…sunshine, pure sunshine….only the good stuff for our viewers”

She didn’t believe a word of it.

As she opened the blinds in kitchen she sighed…in all directions rain clouds, a light sprinkle fell on the lawn….lighting strikes could be seen in the distance.

The tv was turned off in disgust…the last time a tropical day if heat and sun had been predicted by the peroxide breakie hosts flash flooding had occurred….Mornings, she decided there and then, were simpler without their ‘ newsworthy’ predictions.

When I grow up I want to be a FOOT MODEL

Is it true to say that every young girl grows up with the secret wish to be revered for her beauty?

I know that I did…but as I went through that awkward teenage phase of braces, bad acne and oily hair… reality set in!! On the rarest occasions, teenage girls emerge from the torment of adolescents a beautiful swan….straight teeth, clever skin and silky hair…ready to grace the cover of a glossy magazine.

Though I came through adolescents at the other end… I was simply a humble human being…an average soul with a beaming smile.

Modelling, that elusive career was out of my reach, I was 17 and had never been talent scouted for the catwalk despite my tall stature.

It was then and there that I looked at other body parts I was blessed with, namely hands and feet ….and wondered…. Could I make it as a Hand model or a Foot model?!

Could I become a Hand Supermodel, a Foot Catwalk queen?!

Whilst I waited to be discovered I took up a job as a check out chick and enrolled at University.

15 years later…. It is safe to say my modelling career be it face, foot, hands or ears….NEVER took off.

Yet earlier this week as I watched commercial TV, I was captivated by an advertisement for a do it yourself pedicure set by the company Scholl. The advertisement featured, Gemma Howorth….introduced as an ‘ international foot model’ ….. Gemma stole my fantasy career!!

Curious I read up on this ‘ foot model’… And as I did I pined for a career that never was….As I write this post I look at hands that failed to bring in a six figure income for their exquisite beauty…. But I smile a gap tooth smile( even the braces failed) for my career to date, teacher, travel agent and university course co-ordinator has been far more rewarding!!!

Princess Mae turns 3

One of my mini best friends appears to be the most loved 3 year old in Wollongong, NSW, Australia.

She is certainly the most loved little girl in her own small universe which comprises of a Mum, Dad, two sets of Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and numerous friends.

All those who make up planet Mae, gathered on Sunday to celebrate her 1095th day on planet earth.

Those who had shared in the wonder that has been the last 3 years of this little girl’s life where there to celebrate. The shirks of delight started at 12 noon, guests walked into a house full of pink helium balloons….and from that moment on the excitement levels remained at fever pitch.

Presents galore, lollies and cake, dancing and donuts, trampoline antics and party poppers. And laughter….lots of it, smiles aplenty….especially from the birthday girl, who has made the world in which we all live a richer, happier place…..just by being her perfect self.

A tiredness that comes from celebrating like a 3 year old when you are 35 eventually caught up with me…and the other adult guests. My Mini best friend had exhausted me by 4pm. But like my other mini bestie’s, there is nothing I would not do for them…and that includes partying like you are a child again. Ms Mae, you have my world just that little bit brighter. Happy 3rd Birthday, lots of love your Fairy Godmother xx

Five Sentence Fiction- Ache

Word Prompt- Ache
These 5 Sentences were inspired by the poem ‘ Ode to a Nightingale’ by my favourite poet, John Keats.

She sat enthralled by the words her English teacher read aloud:

‘ My heart aches and a drowsy numbness pains’

She was not sure what exactly this poet Mr Keats was on about…but she was captivated by the richness of his words and the imagery they inspired.

‘ Now more than ever seems it rich to die, To cease upon the midnight with no pain, While thou art pouring forth thy soul abroad in such sweet ecstasy!

As her teacher read the final verse, a single tear rolled down her cheek, and in an instant she knew that this was the beginning of a lifelong appreciation of the poetry of the magnificent John Keats.

Five Sentence Fiction – Frozen

Word Prompt- Frozen

The cafe music stopped her dead in her tracks.

She stood still, frozen, her mind flashing back to a time when she knew what is was to be happy.

She swore she could hear her former lovers voice whispering in her ear ‘ I told you that we could fly, ‘cause we all have wings, but some of us don’t know why’

Tears welled in her eyes, the lyrics caused her body to sway involuntarily, her heart ached.

‘ I, I was standing, You were there, Two worlds collided, and they could never tear us apart’

And the song that inspired this piece- INXS, Never Tear Us Apart

Cafe Del Mar, Sydney, Australia

Cafe Del Mar

Cafe Del Mar

Friendship Fire starter: something that promotes friendship, encourages a catch up or strengthens a bond between two or more people.

Café Del Mar….I had longed to go there.

One of the greatest gifts of travel…exposure to new things, new cultures, new foods, new music, different points of views, life lessons that can’t be taught in a classroom or learnt from a book.

Two years living in Europe many moons ago, and I fell in love with the idea of going to Café Del Mar, a trendy café and music emporium located in Ibiza, a party island found of the Spanish coastline in Mediterranean sea.
But truth be told……I would not have survived a day on this party island. My catholic upbringing insured I was too inhibited for such hedonistic fun.

Fast forward 12 years….times have changed…I am ready!

Armed with two of the bestest girlfriends I could ever want, Ms Kate and Ms Steph, we ascended on Café Del Mar, Sydney City.

Us girls would have a good time anywhere….location, location, location is so secondary when I catch up with these ladies.

And whilst the view was stunning, the food and drinks spectacular and the Sunday session tunes very smooth….I could not help but think that this experience was a bit dated….If I had only jumped on a plane all those years ago and dived head first into the Ibiza party scene I might have well avoided yesterday!!

No, I wouldn’t change a thing……yesterday was special, a great catch up……location irrelevant.

And it wasn’t till I reflected on the lunch later that evening that I was overcome with the strangest realisation….I had never really wanted to go to Café Del Mar at all…..rather its rival, the Buddha Bar in Paris.
