Why write when you can RUN!!

On Sunday the 11th of August I completed the City2Surf.

City 2 Surf

City 2 Surf

It was the BEST day EVER….

What is the City2Surf? It is the largest fun run in the world. 85,000 people run, walk, hop and or skip the 14 km track from the CBD of Sydney to Bondi Beach.

It was the BEST day EVER!!

For so many reasons….

The sense of community was alive and well. I arrived at the bus stop at 7.21am, only to realise that no bus would be able to stop to collect me….they were filled to capacity. People were squashed like sardines in a can, being propelled forward in big blue rectangles on wheels.

Not I….I high tailed it as soon as I realised a bus ride was not an option, only to be rescued by a lovely lady named ‘ Kerry’ who was driving her husband ‘ Larry’ into the city for the race.

Not only did ‘ Kerry ‘ transport me, but two other men who had remained at the bus stop….‘ Boys, do you want a lift?’ Kerry had yelled out the car window on approach….and sure enough, the two men ran like the starting gun had gone off at the City2Surf….and joined me in the back seat for a ride to the city.

The sense of wonder and fun that comes from running with 85,000 other people along the magnificent running course that is the City2Surf. I ran with the blind, the able-bodied, professional athletes, families, the young, middle-aged, and ‘young at heart’….I ran with people dressed in costumes, from Big Bird and Elmo, Superman, Pokemon and the Smurf Boys of Double Bay.

The sense of happiness and satisfaction that comes from doing something you NEVER thought you would EVER do…And for me, that was run 14kms…I never thought I would possess the fitness level to complete such a task. But I did…and I think I smiled the whole way from Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach.

And when it was all over the accolades poured in…

My Mum and Dad called me a ‘ Champion’

Friends congratulated me on ‘ surviving’, said they ‘ knew I would be ok’, along with lines of ‘ congratulations’ and ‘ well done’

But the text message that inspired me most came from my friend Belinda, who I am told after a few wines, sent me the following well wishes on Friday the 9th of Aug:

‘Just want to wish you all the best for your City2Surf…..You are so COOL, BraVE and CrazY’

Yes, I am cool, brave and crazy cause next year I vow to do it all again!!

City 2 Surf 2013, 11th of August : Sydney CBD to Bondi

I have entered myself in the City 2 Surf, the LARGEST timed road race in the world!!

In two weeks’ time, on Sunday the 11th of August, I will run, walk and or crawl, with all 85,000 other entrants from Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach.

I have mixed emotions about the whole thing, but having been training one day a week with a personal trainer since March…I was questioning what I was going to do with my new level of fitness.

The answer?  A fun run

And I am running for charity. I have not mentioned this not for profit organisation in my blog writing before for fear that if I mentioned it I would not be able to stop.

Check it out via clicking below:

Sydney Story Factory

The Sydney Story Factory is located in  Redfern Sydney, a not for profit creative writing centre which sole purpose is to encourage children to write.

Trained volunteers (of which I am one) offer free help to children write stories of all kinds. Programs target marginalised young people, and those from Indigenous and non-English speaking backgrounds, but are open to everyone.

I won’t go on…I vow to write more about the Story Factory in other blog entries…but I mention it as it is the charity I have chosen to dedicate my City 2 Surf run to…And YOU can sponsor me!!

I am running with the staff from publishing house ‘Random House’, with all monies raised going to the Sydney Story Factory.

To sponsor me, simply click on the link below.

Then you type in Random House and donate next to that name.

Thank you in advance, pray for me on the 11th of August and please check out the Sydney Story Factory (it will change your life, as it did mine!!)

Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2012

In a couple of hours I will board a flight, an international flight….I am bound for Ubud, Bali.

I am excited about my 10 day holiday.

But I just got home from a café breakfast, walked home through the parklands, collecting my laundry from the laundromat on the way…

And with each step I took on my morning stroll, I felt self-assured, mindful of my sense in inner calm and inner peace…I guess you would call it HAPPINESS?!

You know you are in a GOOD place, when you are faced with the prospect of 10 days in a tropical paradise and you realise your happiness levels would remain unchanged if, instead, you stayed home for the same period of time!

Don’t get me WRONG…I am getting on that PLANE…there is nothing more I would rather do!….

But personal happiness and joy comes from within…I FINALLY get it…after many years of looking outward for joy, blaming my unhappiness on everything OTHER than myself….Not willing or strong enough to take accountability and ownership of the direction my life was taking…

Well that was the PAST

So today take a PLANE, and on this journey I take with me my new outlook and perspective, my suitcase packed to the brim with two particular travel items : Happiness and Mindfulness

Off to the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2012, a literally festival set in the tropical paradise. I am volunteering to work there, have been assigned the role of Main Area Supervisor for one of the festival venues…

Check out the Festival website…be inspired and transported to a place in which happiness is plentiful:

www.ubudwritersfestival.com

I can’t wait to immerse myself in the festival vibe, feel the hot humidity of the Balinese climate on my skin, take in the sights, sounds and smells of my holiday surrounds….be captivated by the smiles of the Balinese people.

I hope to write about my experiences in UBUD daily, keep a personal journal…When I get back to Australia I will share some to the wonderful tales that will no doubt have transpired….

Then again…I might not be able to help myself…So inspired I might be that I won’t be able to stop writing post blog posts at a rapid rate, 3 a day?

Who can say…But to truly enjoy a holiday, and the respite they provide from the everyday,  you have to be present in the moment, open to new experiences….not sat in front of a computer screen diligently recording events as they happen around you!

Happy Days Ahead!!

Bon Voyage to Me!!

CUWAM: Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Weber Musical Theatre

Love Never Dies : Melbourne

Love Never Dies…I have followed the show from Melbourne to Sydney…The Phantom of the Opera =sequel…Whats not to LOVE??

On Wednesday the 8th of February, 33 people from my work place ascended on the Capital Theatre, Haymarket, Sydney to see former colleague and customer service extraordinaire, Mr Ben Lewis play the leading role aka The Phantom in the Andrew Lloyd Weber‘s new musical.

Ben stole the show, his voice soared above all others, it commanded your full attention…he was mesmorising.

Do yourself a favour, and if you get the change to see ‘ Love Never Dies’, do it…it is worth it for Ben’s voice alone.

After the show was over, 33 people from my workplace patiently waited at the stage door exit for our Phantom to appear.

Ben, ever so humble, greeted us all with hugs, smiles and much laughter. Our attempts to woo his back to his former place of employment clearly failed. I had printed off the current job vacancy list for the University, duty statements galore, and handed over a bag full of promotional material, pens, Sydney University  Koala Bears, stickers, even a Sydney University mouse pad…but the Phantom seems destined for bigger things…Next stop ‘ maybe London’….Why not the customer service counter of the University of Sydney exchange office I ask??

And two days later, the office is still on a high, there is much talk, the occasional spontaneous sing along…all Phantom based of course…

A nice way to add a bit of spice to the week of office administraion…Love Never Dies….and our office’s love for Mr Lewis seems to be as strong as ever after Wednesday nights show.

Love Never Dies is on at the Capital Theatre, Haymarket Sydney until the 1st of April, 2012
